Online shops use “open-box”, “refurbished” and “used” in different ways, which makes comparing deals confusing. Here is what each term normally means, how much you can save and when each is the smart choice.

The short version

Condition What it means Typical saving
Brand new Sealed, never opened. Often overstock. 10–40% off RRP when bought as overstock
Open-box Unused, but the box was opened – usually a customer return or display item. 20–50%
Refurbished Used or faulty, then repaired and restored, often with new parts. 20–50%
Used Previously used, working, may show signs of use. 40–70%

Open-box: the sweet spot

Most open-box items were bought online and sent back because the buyer changed their mind, ordered two sizes or found it cheaper elsewhere. The product itself is usually perfect. You save because the box is no longer sealed – sometimes it is dented, taped or missing.

Best for: kitchen appliances, mirrors, lighting, tools, furniture, anything you will unbox and use straight away.

Refurbished: check who refurbished it

“Refurbished” can mean a manufacturer rebuild with a full warranty, or a quick clean by a reseller. Look for the grade, what was replaced and how long the warranty is. Refurbished makes most sense for phones, laptops and consoles.

Used: biggest saving, read the description

Used items have been used, but a good seller tests them and tells you exactly what is missing or marked – with photos. Read the condition notes carefully: “missing screws” or “no mop tank” can matter.

Best for: robust items where a scratch does not matter – tools, garden equipment, vacuum cleaners, storage, sports kit.

Your rights in the UK

  • Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, goods bought from a business – new or used – must be of satisfactory quality, as described and fit for purpose (taking their age and condition into account).
  • When you buy online you normally have 14 days to cancel under the Consumer Contracts Regulations.
  • At Massive Discounts every order has 30-day returns, so you have more time than the legal minimum.

How we grade at Massive Discounts

We sell Amazon customer returns and overstock from our warehouse in Worksop. Every item is checked and graded as Brand new, Open-Box, Used or (clearly labelled) For parts. The first line of each description in red tells you exactly what we found, and photos show any marks. Full details: our condition grades explained and is buying customer returns worth it?

Which should you choose?

  • Giving it as a gift: brand new.
  • Using it yourself, want the best value: open-box.
  • Tight budget, robust item: used.
  • Phones and laptops: refurbished with a warranty.
